Custom Orthotics & Flat Feet

What are Custom Orthotics?
Custom Orthotics refers to custom-made shoe inserts prescribed by a licensed doctor of podiatric medicine after a medical examination and diagnosis. Custom Orthotics are designed to correct biomechanical foot issues such as abnormal or irregular patterns in how you walk, stand, or run. They can lift an arch, relieve heel pain, and/or help compensate for a toe joint deformity.

Am I a candidate for Custom Orthotics?

Orthotics help make standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient by altering the angles at which the foot strikes the ground. Custom Orthotics placed inside your shoes can absorb shock, improve balance, and take pressure off sore spots. Strains, aches, and pain in the legs, thighs and lower back may be due to abnormal foot mechanics or slight differences in the length of the legs. They can also help with foot pain caused by medical conditions such as diabetes, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, and arthritis. Custom Orthotics might even help you avoid surgery to fix flat feet.

How are Custom Orthotics different from over-the-counter (OTC) shoe inserts?

Over-the-counter (OTC) shoe inserts may provide cushioning and support, being made of materials like gel, plastic, or foam. OTC inserts fit into your shoes, but are not custom-made for your feet. While OTC inserts might make your shoes temporarily more comfortable, they aren't designed to correct foot problems.

Custom Orthotics generally cost more than OTC shoe inserts because when you get custom orthotics, you're also getting a medical evaluation of your foot problem, a custom fit, and high quality materials that should last for several years with proper care. Since custom orthotics are prescription medical devices, your insurance company might help cover the cost. Check your plan.
